Handgun Permit

Complete and submit Virginia State Police form SP-248 to the Circuit Court in the jurisdiction WHERE YOU RESIDE. Failure to apply in the jurisdiction where you reside will result in the application being transferred to the proper jurisdiction and repayment of filing fee.

You may RENEW your handgun permit by mail. Download the 2012 version of the SP-248 application from the state police website, complete the application, sign before a notary and send in with the $50 filing fee. The renewal will be issued 45 days from receipt of a PROPERLY COMPLETED application and the filing fee. Any application that is not complete will be immediately returned to the applicant for correction. PLEASE NOTE: If your permit has expired, your application will be treated as an original application.  

 

Any person 21 years of age or older may apply in writing to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County or City in which he or she resides, or if he is a member of the United States Armed Forces, the County or City in which he or she is domiciled, for a five-year permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Proof of competency with a weapon is requred upon filing the original application for a concealed weapon permit. Acceptable forms of proof of competency are outlined in §18.2-308(G) of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended. The Clerk's office has a listing of classes you may attend locally or you may take a course online at concealed-carry.net.

The filing fee for the application for a concealed weapon permit is $50 and is payable upon filing.
